Savannah boasts rich history amid modern vibrance
by Yujing Zhao

It was a major colonial port and a battleground of the Revolutionary and Civil wars. It provided the setting for John Jakes’ novels and a certain film starring Tom Hanks (“Forrest Gump”). These are just a few reasons why Savannah is synonymous with Southern history and culture. But the attraction of Savannah isn't limited to those elements. This iconic city can appeal to all visitors with charm and hospitality.
The Riverfront Plaza is an essential stop for history buffs and everyone else alike. This combined historic district and shopping venue spans nine blocks along the Savannah River waterfront and teems with antique shops and gourmet restaurants. Nearby lies City Market, a similar establishment that's also home to an eclectic group of art galleries.
While in the area, tourists can relish a meal at Belford's Savannah Seafood and Steaks, which is acclaimed for its casual dining experience. For the most part it's an affordable choice for the college student seeking an exquisite meal on occasion. The Lemon Pepper Grouper is a favorite local specialty.
Savannah's history is also on display in its varied architecture. A stroll through the historic district reveals styles from Regency to Gothic Revival. One of these these buildings, the Green-Meldrim House, served as Civil War headquarters of Gen. William Sherman.          Other locations claimed their fame more recently, when the making of “Forrest Gump” catapulted the city into popular culture. The feather in the opening shot falls over Madison Square in Savannah. Chippewa Square was the site of the bench where Tom Hanks was filmed as the title character relating his life story. The original bench has been placed in the Savannah History Museum. The domineering fountain in Forsythe Park also appeared in the movie.
The city's commercial district is a fast-expanding market of upscale stores frequented by affluent shoppers. Abercorn Common has made a name as Savannah's primary shopping destination. The mall is known for blending modern commerce and a historic look, along with its groundbreaking, efficient "green" design. Notable businesses in the Common include the local F.P. Wortley Jewelers and regional furniture store Grand Harbour Imports. Locos Grill and Pub serves the whole spectrum of fast food, from exotic burgers to custom salads to meatless wraps, plus Mexican cuisine. Another highlight of the food court is Panera Bread, a bakery and cafe favored for its fresh sandwiches and pastries.
The Savannah Mall is a second shopping hot spot. After stumbling into decline during the ’90s, it has made a comeback by hosting a drove of local stores as well as more high-end retailers.
Savannah beckons with its storied past, modern boom and some film roles in between. There's no dearth of compelling attractions in this true Southern city less than a three-hour drive from Columbia. Everyone in the Carolinas should seize a day, or more, to take in and appreciate Savannah, Ga.
