Letter from the editor
The Carolina Cup, an annual horse race in nearby Camden, has become a celebrated all-day event that draws out the debutante and white knight in thousands of students every March. What starts out as a horse race ends up as a day of tailgating in true Southern style. The Cup turns into a veritable stomping ground for spring fashion – Southern style of course. Girls don floral dresses with large-brimmed hats and dark sunglasses. Boys go with tradition in bow ties, seersucker and top siders.
This issue, we featured the USC Women’s Equestrian team modeling the latest Cup-worthy dresses from local boutiques. And to maintain authenticity, we held the photo shoot at the equestrian team’s stable in Blythewood, complete with barn, hay and horses. In this issue we also put together a user-friendly guide to the presidential election madness. For the past year and a half, candidates have been whirling through Columbia in an effort to garner support and votes. Even though the primaries have come and gone in South Carolina, there’s still a long road ahead until the elections on November fourth. That means there’s lots of time for researching candidates and figuring out who aligns with your values and issues. Take a look at the table we compiled on page 18.
For the sports fans, we did a piece on March Madness. I didn’t ever realize how important a ‘holiday’ this is until I lived in Spain, and the other American students in the group stayed up until 4 in the morning watching the games in a Tex-Mex bar (the time change made it really late). So don’t become too hasty to see summer. There’s still plenty to enjoy before we get there. And isn’t it all about the journey anyway?
Up here in the Garnet&Black office, it certainly has been about the journey. This year, our entire staff was brand new to the magazine, and I am extremely proud of them and their dedication to creating a publication that reflects the student body. This is my last issue as editor in chief since I will be graduating in May, but I leave you in able hands and hope everyone enjoyed the journey as much as I did. >> February's Letter from the Editor
